9.23.22

This week in Meeting for Worship I watched as two of our 8th Graders clerked (led) the meeting and I marveled at how growing up in this school community has taught them how to do this with confidence. As more than 200 students in grades 1-8 and faculty settled into the silence together I marveled at our collective ability to sit for 20 minutes in silence and listen for the small still voice inside of each of us.
I recently met a high school senior at Quaker school who shared that sitting in quiet is a skill. A skill that his future classmates in college will lack. One that he believes will serve him well when he matriculates to college. “I will know how to settle my mind and hear my own voice.”

How often in our lives do we as adults set aside 5 minutes let alone 20 to think about nothing or think deeply about some event or moment in our lives? We often lack the discipline or the time. What a gift our children will have being able to silence the cacophony of the world. Our children are acquiring an ability that will serve them their entire lives.
