Yet we cannot stay stuck in that reality, which is why it gave me a moment of hope to open an email from the National Cathedral and read about an event called “Love thy Neighbor” taking place Monday, May 23 at 7 pm ET. The event features what at first seemed to me to be an unlikely pairing of David Brooks and Dr. Catherine Meeks. But upon closer inspection I read that both of them run organizations focused on building stronger connections in communities. They will talk about “how healing in our local communities contributes to healing the soul of the nation.”
 
Even if that feels like a far off goal this week when local communities are hurting in unimaginable ways, I recognize it as a goal worth marching toward. No matter your position, political stripe, faith or race, it is vital in times of crisis that we all speak up and step up.
 
In his song, “Anthem” Leonard Cohen sings: 
 

Ring the bells that still can ring
Forget your perfect offering
There is a crack, a crack in everything
That’s how the light gets in.

We must keep showing up, imperfect and weary though we may be, so we can peer into those cracks. What we find there will compel us to mend what is broken, to heal what is hurt.
