“To thine own self be true.”

The other day I was in front of the school for the afternoon car line and three 4th graders were passing the time grinding rocks in wet patches on the cement and comparing the colors they made to those of their skin. In the trio were three different skin tones. Their curious conversation and exploration reminded me of something I used to do with my students when I was a teacher.

My students would engage in a yearlong study of their own growing and changing selves by doing a series of self-portraits from different angles, using different mediums, over time. Through this ongoing project, they learned about their own multifaceted features both inside and outside.

Several classes at FCS have started the year with explorations of self-identity. They are painting, drawing, writing, speaking, and listening, growing as a community as they grow to know themselves. It has been wonderful to learn more about each of our students through the work they create and share.

In a world that is constantly changing, it is important for children to grow into knowing who they are. Whether that is on the playground learning to navigate a conflict with their friend or sitting in silence and learning how to discern the voice of the Divine in their own being, or learning how to mix paint so it perfectly matches the color of their skin. Each of these experiences takes us closer to knowing who we are, and that may very well be one of the most important things that happen in school.

In peace,
