Here she comes
Silent in her sound
Here she comes
Fresh upon the ground
Come gentle spring
Come at winter’s end
Gone is the pallour from a promise that’s nature’s gift
Waiting for the color of spring

- Talk Talk, “April 5”

Like so many bulbs peeking their first green through the warming soil, this week FCS was filled with signs of growth and the promise of so many blossoming minds as grades K-8 all had their days on campus.

Classrooms were colored with laughter and the hum of learning. Stick forts emerged on the playground. Collections of pinecones and other natural ephemera gathered on tables. And students found ways to remodel familiar games with the invention of a form of tag that required no touch.

It’s officially been a year since we had to close our doors and shift to online learning when COVID became a new and frightening part of reality. It is easy to list all we have missed. But seeing our children together once again I marvel at all that grew. Everyone is taller. And our children have learned new ways to care for each other. They have an appreciation for one another’s well being.

As we complete a full trip around the sun in this pandemic, hope grows. Next week we’ll have full days on campus for all our grades. Everyone on staff who chose to get vaccinated will have completed their second dose by the time we return from spring break. No matter the length or ferocity of the winter, spring always comes. It is indeed “a promise that’s nature’s gift.” And this spring, the colors emerging are all the more beautiful for how much we longed to see them bright and shining again.
