"We shall overcome because the arc of the moral universe is long but it bends toward justice."
–Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
These words have been on my mind all month from January 15, Dr. King's actual birthday, when he would have turned 92, to January 18 when people across the nation took the day to remember him, to inauguration day when the quote above was shared with me more than once, to this Wednesday when the FCS community came together to celebrate his life and legacy.
I remember the beauty of all our students gathered in the Peace Circle singing "We Shall Overcome" last year and of course singing the song together online was not the same. But to watch that screen filled with our students' bright faces lifted in song on Wednesday morning I felt that flame of hope burn bright. We are raising the next generation of justice warriors, the ones who will keep bending that arc of the universe, and I am so thankful to our student-led Middle School Diversity Committee for planning a celebration that made that clear. Supported through the guidance of Jennie Claiborne, they managed every facet of this beautiful learning experience and reminded us of another truth spoken by Dr. King that feels so important at this moment:
"Darkness cannot drive out darkness, only light can do that.
Hate cannot drive out hate, only love can do that."
In Peace and Partnership,
