This week, I was reminded of the generosity of the human spirit. In a time of isolation and separation, we have struggled with the lack of connection and interaction with others.
As we all know, securing the COVID vaccinations for the elderly, teachers, and front-line workers has been difficult and elusive in our region and across the nation. I asked one of our associations for help and shared in a regional heads of school meeting, FCS’s challenge in securing the vaccine for all of our teachers and staff. Someone heard me. This week the Archdiocese of Washington and Reid Temple Academy offered and scheduled vaccinations for our employees. This generosity was a poignant reminder that even though at another time we might have been viewed as a competitor, FCS was seen as a friend in need.

For nearly a year, I have watched Dan Miller, our Facilities Manager and the sole member of our Buildings and Grounds crew, faithfully care for our campus. Dan has kept it cleaned, painted, and has overseen modifications that enable us to safely return. The preparation for the return of students has been more than one person can handle. A few of Dan’s colleagues surprised him one weekend and came to school to help with painting. Over the holiday weekend, three FCS fathers helped him move large furniture and boxes. Thanks to the efforts of a parent, tomorrow, 8th grade parents will come to campus and assist Dan with the final tasks that need to be completed.

Over these past months we have all acutely felt the distance from our friends, families, and social networks. But I am reminded again that despite physical distance we remain connected to each other. The kindness shown to our FCS community will help us emerge from this isolation with strength and hope.

In Peace and Partnership,
