Stewardship is one of the many Quaker testimonies that serve as a statement of belief and a goal for one’s actions. As a Quaker school, we strive to be good stewards of our resources. “All that we have, in ourselves and our possessions, are gifts from God, entrusted to us for our responsible use.”[1]

Beginning next week, the architectural firm Sanchez Palmer will commence a feasibility study, consisting of three parts: facility and site conditions assessment; space-use analysis; and concept designs. Basically, the study will tell us how well we are taking care of our school and how we can better utilize our interior and exterior spaces.

We are also partnering with Naomi Sachs, a professor at the Department of Plant Sciences and Landscape Architecture at the University of Maryland. Dr. Sachs teaches a design studio class in landscape architecture to undergraduates. Her students will research children’s play, natural play spaces, and engagement with nature. During this upcoming spring semester, they will create designs for our outdoor space.

Since 2007, we have inhabited this beautiful 32,000-square-foot building, nestled behind Greenbelt National Park. The Quaker testimony of stewardship recognizes that the Divine is found in nature, and our children are fortunate to observe and play in nature every day. Through financial sacrifice and visionary thinking, FCS has settled into this beautiful green campus. If we are to live by the testimony of stewardship, it is important that we take the time to care for what we have.

In Partnership,
Angela
