The most frequent questions from this year’s prospective parents are about the leadership transition at FCS. Parents hope that our Quaker values, progressive pedagogy, and welcoming tone will continue to be hallmarks of an FCS education. Our community is working to welcome Angela Garcia and to provide opportunities for her to better understand and appreciate FCS’s strengths and areas for growth.

Consistent with NAIS best practice for leadership transition, our Board plans to welcome Angela to the community through a few visits this semester and ongoing communication during her first year with us. Angela and I talk on a regular basis about the major projects I am working on that she will inherit. This weekend, Angela will participate in our annual Board retreat, as we explore issues of budget, strategic planning, and essential transition activities. Following the retreat, Angela will meet with the school’s Transition Committee, consisting of trustees, teachers, and parents, to clarify processes and plans for the coming year. Angela is planning to participate in a workshop for Quaker educators sponsored by the Friends Council on Education. Through the spring, Angela and I will continue to discuss topics most important to a successful transition.

It is a very busy time for everyone, especially Angela. She has only a few months to complete her work for the Fessenden School while she also learns about FCS’s past, present, and anticipated future. We’re all here to support her in this effort.

In Peace,
Larry
