The Growing Cycle at FCS

Sowing seeds of thanks!  Third and fourth graders harvested seeds from the native plants in the FCS Butterfly Garden and packaged them as “thank yous” for contributions to the 2016 Annual Giving Fund.
FCS’s third- and fourth-graders harvested the seeds from the Milkweed, Virginia Wild Rye, and Indian Wood Oats that grow in the school’s Butterfly Garden. Many of these perennials were planted by the same students when they were in kindergarten and first grade. Native plants on the school’s 17-acre campus support butterflies and other pollinators that serve an essential role in the ecosystem.

The 3/4s recently learned more about the plants’ growth cycle by collecting mature seed pods from the garden and opening them in their classrooms. The milkweed seeds were a big hit, floating through the air on silk-like fluff called coma. Caught and allowed to dry, the seeds were separated from the coma and counted into coin envelopes.
Look for your FCS native seeds in the mail after donating to the Annual Giving Fund as a uniquely symbolic "thank you" and also a tangible example of the Annual Giving Fund at work. AGF funds support the caretaking of our Butterfly Garden, our partnership with the Monarch Sister Schools Program, hands-on classroom lessons, and other aspects of FCS’s progressive educational program that tuition alone does not cover.
If you haven’t yet given to the 2016 Annual Giving Fund, now is the time (and it’s easy to do online). From now until March 31, an anonymous donor has offered to match gifts from all first-time donors and any previous donors increasing their gift by 20% or more, up to a total of $10,000.
