First Grader Selected Winner in Nation-Wide Scholastic Contest
During March in Michelle Utara’s 1/2 class, students participated in Scholastic’s nationwide “Dragon in my Classroom" contest. They pretend a dragon joins their class, and then draw its picture, name it, identify its favorite thing to learn in school and, “of course, what it eats for lunch”.
As part of their fiction unit in which they created characters, Michelle thought it’d be a fun activity for her students. “I had my class enter The Dragon in my Classroom Contest because they are an amazing group of creative artists.” Michelle said. “The children were very excited about the contest and submitted wonderful entries.”
Last Friday, Michelle learned one of her first graders, Siena Sinnott, had been selected as one of ten winners from across the country of pre-K through second grade classes.
For her prize, Siena received a collection of forty dragon-themed books, two stuffed dragon plushies for herself and the classroom, and “Adopt-a-dragon” kits for everyone in her class.
The students have named the Dragon Emerald, and now sits proudly in their classroom for all to enjoy. Congratulations to Siena and Michelle's class!
