Student Voice Spotlight

Five FCS 6th-graders were published on middle grade author Kelly Yang's site after crafting responses to the prompt, "What is a book that made you feel 'finally seen'?" 5/6 Language Arts Teacher Holly Stephens explained, “I assigned the prompt as an in-class journaling assignment since all 6th-graders read at least one "mirror book" this fall during our Identity unit. Then, I asked if anyone wanted to revise their responses for this publishing opportunity.”
One of the writers featured, Maisie, noted, “The Finally Seen writing challenge was really fun! Whether my work was published or not, I was so excited to give it a try. It was such an interesting project and a cool way to get published for anyone to read. It was also so enlightening to feel that other people really did care about my and so many other kids' stories.”
