Accent Practice

As 6th graders get ready for their performance of Matilda, they’re learning about more than dancing and singing. The story takes place in England so they’re learning to do the show with English accents!
Last Friday, British actor - Jonathan Holmes - worked with the Matilda cast. Accent practice is not just about getting the sounds of words correct, Music and Performing Arts Teacher Kiersten Whitehead, explains, “we also want to make sure the audience can understand the story we are telling, so Jonathan came and went over some basic rules with us. And we began to work through some of the songs.”

Part of that practice involves learning the proper pronunciation of Rs and Ts. Jonathan offered a contrast between American and British English noting that the British accent is “much more forward and bright.”

Jonathan will come to work with the cast again, practice is picking up and set design is starting. Make sure you save the date for the show which will run at 7 PM each night on April 28 and 29, 2023.
