Welcome to FCS, Matt Aborn
This week, Friends Community School announced the hiring of Matthew Aborn as the next Head of Lower School. He will assume the position on July 1, 2020.
Matt is an experienced independent administrator and progressive educator. He most recently served as the Lower School Head at Green Acres School in Bethesda, Maryland, and previously served in the same capacity at the Solomon Schechter School and East Woods School in New York. Eighteen years ago, Matt’s career began as a fourth grade teacher at The Hillbrook School in Los Gatos, California. He later served as a curriculum coordinator at The Dwight School and the IDEAL School in New York City. For the last year and a half, Matt has been a stay-at-home parent to his two young children, Ione (age 5) and Augie (age 3).
Matt earned his undergraduate degree in elementary education and history at Goucher College and holds a master’s degree in Learning and Teaching from the Harvard University Graduate School of Education.
During his campus visit at FCS, Matt had the opportunity to meet with Lower School teachers, students, and parents. Matt impressed the search committee with his knowledge of progressive education and inquiry-based curriculum, and his understanding of child development.
Regarding his appointment, Matt shared, “I am thrilled to join Friends Community School as the next Head of Lower School. I’m looking forward to working with such an inspiring group of educators, children, and their families. The constellation of progressive educational practices and the Quaker way of life at FCS guides children into rich and meaningful learning, and I am honored to partner with you all in this powerful work.”
We look forward to welcoming Matt to FCS this summer.
