Beyond the Classroom

Beyond the Classroom

At FCS, learning doesn’t stop at the classroom door—it stretches into the woods, the city, and the wider world. Whether tending a school garden, exploring local museums, engaging in service projects, or embarking on overnight trips, our students discover that every experience is an opportunity to learn, connect, and grow. These adventures foster curiosity, deepen understanding, and inspire students to see themselves as active participants in their communities and the world beyond.

  • Committees

Middle School students have the option to take part in a committee, a student-led group all dedicated to one cause or interest to improve the school or unite the community. These committees aim to give students the opportunity to come together as peers to address community concerns or bring new ideas to life, and work collectively to better their community. Our student committees empower young people to enact change and see the tangible impact of their actions.
  • Field Trips

Field trips extend learning beyond the classroom, offering students firsthand experiences that deepen their understanding of academic concepts and the world around them. Whether hiking through national parks or exploring the rich museums and cultural institutions in the DMV, these shared adventures spark curiosity and help students make authentic, lasting connections to each other and their learning.
  • Learning Outdoors

Situated on 17 wooded acres, we embrace outdoor learning as a way to foster curiosity, enhance academics, and practice stewardship. Whether conducting science experiments in the woods, writing poetry at the picnic tables, creating mathematical structures on the lawn, or simply reading under a tree, we utilize nature at FCS to help students learn, play, and connect with their environment.

  • Athletics

Our Middle School athletics program emphasizes growth, sportsmanship, and joy in play, giving every student the chance to challenge themselves and celebrate collective achievement. Athletics become a way for students to strengthen both body and character, fostering confidence, resilience, and respect for others.
  • Catoctin Quaker Camp Trips

Each year, our students take an annual trip to the Catoctin Quaker Camp. Students spend time in the Catoctin Mountains, where camping and shared outdoor experiences strengthen bonds and build resilience. These trips invite students to slow down, live simply, and deepen their sense of community and connection to nature.
  • Service Projects & Social Responsibility

Both Quakerism and progressive education call for students to see themselves as part of a larger community and as agents for positive change. Through service projects, discussions of equity and justice, and a curriculum that values empathy and action, students grow into thoughtful citizens who believe in their ability to make a difference.
