Academics in the Lower School

Children love to learn. FCS fuels that excitement. Our Lower School academic program combines evidence-based instruction in literacy (UFLI Foundations) and math (Eureka Math2) with a rich foundation in the arts, sciences, and world languages, cultivating engagement and curiosity throughout the younger years.

In Kindergarten through Grade 4, students study Spanish, music, art, and physical education alongside their core subjects (reading, writing, math, phonics, science, and social studies), giving them a well-rounded experience that builds both skills and joy in learning while setting a foundation for the years ahead.

Sparking a love for learning

From the joyful first steps in Kindergarten through the growing independence of 4th grade, our Lower School nurtures curiosity, confidence, and compassion. In keeping with the progressive underpinnings of our school, FCS teachers foster the intellectual, creative, social, spiritual, and physical development of the whole child. We respect different developmental stages and meet each child at their level, individually supporting them as they grow and progress.

Learning at the elementary level is on a continuum. We guide students in connecting their learning to the real world, whether learning about one another’s differences in Kindergarten or diving into an analysis of our recycling habits during a climate change project in Third/Fourth Grade. Through these experiences, children develop a strong foundational belief in who they are as individuals and an understanding of what it means to collaborate with one another, while beginning to recognize the Light within themselves and each other. Learning is hands-on and active, often making use of the space and materials around us, both outdoors and indoors. Grades K through 4 are rooted in Responsive Classroom, a student-centered, social-emotional learning approach to community-building and discipline, that allows our children to feel nurtured and supported so they can fully engage in their academics each day, from Morning Meeting through Closing Circle.

Kindergarten

The Joyful Beginning of a Lifelong Journey

Kindergarten at FCS is a warm, wonder-filled entry point into school life, where joy and discovery go hand-in-hand. With two sections and small class sizes, our youngest learners are nurtured as individuals and embraced as part of a caring community.

Kindergarten teachers supplement curricula with creative projects and experiential activities that connect to the real world. Our thoughtful and intentional Kindergarten program is responsive to the needs and interests of each individual student, as well as the cohort as a whole, and our goal in Kindergarten at FCS is for children to feel excited and positive about their learning, as well as for them to find purpose and meaning in their daily learning tasks. For example, in Writing, they often write their own content for a real audience, and in Math, they count real objects.

The Kindergarten year lays a strong foundation in literacy, numeracy, social-emotional learning, and creative expression, all through play, inquiry, and hands-on exploration. Children build friendships, learn to collaborate, and begin developing the habits of reflection and care that shape their journey through FCS and beyond. Our progressive, Quaker-rooted approach encourages children to ask questions, take healthy risks, and trust in their own voice, all while discovering the light they carry within.

    • Literacy in Kindergarten

Mixed Grade, Meaningful Learning

FCS uses a mixed-grade model in the Lower School to support student growth, leadership, and community. Our 1st/2nd and 3rd/4th grade classes are intentionally designed as blended-age classrooms, where students learn alongside peers at different stages of development. Students stay with the same teacher for two years, creating opportunities to lead and be led, while building strong connections within a consistent classroom community.

To provide strong academic foundations and appropriate challenge, certain core subjects, such as literacy and math, are taught in single-grade groupings using evidence-based programs such as Eureka Math2 and UFLI Foundations (phonics). Other subjects, including writing, social studies, and co-curriculars, unfold in the mixed-grade homerooms using a two-year looping curriculum that ensures depth, continuity, and no repetition. Across all subjects, our approach is grounded in the principles of Responsive Classroom, supporting both academic growth and social-emotional development from Kindergarten through 4th grade.

This model allows for meaningful differentiation, nurtures mentorship among peers, and supports each child’s unique learning journey.

Grades 1 & 2

Foundations of Independence and Wonder

In Grades 1 and 2, children begin to take ownership of their learning by asking deeper questions, forming meaningful relationships, and growing into their voices. These are years of transformation, and the classroom environment reflects that: joyful, reflective, and rich with purpose. Teachers nurture each child’s curiosity and individuality, creating a space where questions are celebrated and every voice matters.

Students are invited to wonder about the world and their place in it. They read and write with intention, explore big ideas in community, and begin to understand how their choices impact others. Through hands-on projects, collaborative work, and moments of quiet reflection, they build confidence not just as learners, but as thoughtful, empathetic people.

Rooted in care and guided by Quaker values, our 1/2 classrooms are where children begin to recognize their capacity, to think critically, practice kindness, and grow in all directions.

Grades 3 & 4

Deepening Thinking, Strengthening Voice

By Grades 3 and 4, students are ready to lean into more complex questions, take on greater responsibility, and engage more deeply with the world around them. 3/4 is a time of growing independence and intellectual risk-taking, and our classrooms are designed to meet that moment with structure, challenge, and warmth.

In these years, students think critically, communicate clearly, and collaborate meaningfully. They explore big concepts through hands-on investigations, long-term projects, and rich discussions. As readers and writers, they analyze, interpret, and reflect. As community members, they take on leadership roles, mentor younger students, and learn to navigate difference with empathy and insight.

Guided by Quaker values and progressive practice, our 3/4 classrooms support each student in becoming a confident learner, a thoughtful friend, and an emerging leader, ready for middle school and the next chapter of their educational journey.

Experiential Learning

Learning through Exploration and Growth

Rooted in progressive, Quaker-based education, our classrooms are alive with inquiry, collaboration, and care. Students engage in hands-on, experiential learning that challenges them to think deeply through real-world experiences and to develop solutions through exploration. With an emphasis on process over product, they reflect on their growth, explore perspectives of others, and develop a foundation for lifelong learning and problem-solving grounded in peace, equity, and respect.

Lower School at FCS is where students begin to understand that learning is not necessarily about having the right answer, it's about asking the right questions and cultivating a growth mindset that will allow them to persist.
In the Lower School, young learners are provided with a strong academic foundation that nurtures curiosity, critical thinking, and social-emotional growth, preparing students for middle school and success in the world beyond.
