Level Up! Video Game Design in Middle School Coding Club

Sara Keller, Admissions and Communications Associate
Each trimester, every middle school student participates in a club of their choice, allowing them to explore personal interests and develop new skills. First-trimester offerings included art, debate, FoCuS (the school newspaper), animal science, sports (flag football and volleyball), yearbook, and coding club.

In coding club, students learned foundational programming concepts while designing and building their own video games. After several weeks of planning, coding, and problem-solving, the middle schoolers were ready to showcase their work.

During a presentation open to the community, each group introduced their game by sharing its storyline, characters, setting, and design choices. Students then demonstrated gameplay before inviting peers to play and test the games themselves.
