Down dog, cat/cow, child’s pose, and balloon breathing were all being practiced in 7th and 8th grade Habits of Being classes this week as students explored mindfulness through meditation and yoga. The Habits of Being classes are designed to teach a range of social and emotional skills. This particular unit focuses on the theme of self awareness.
Lisa and Daniela teach these classes to all Middle School students once a week. As Lisa explains, this week “we began the lesson with a mindfulness exercise followed by a stretch break. Students engaged in two yoga sessions that focused on the whole body but particularly their core. Yoga poses ranged from very easy to more challenging poses such as the plank.”
She noted that students really enjoyed the quiet time to focus on their breathing and bodies. The learning continues in coming weeks as students will engage in exercises to benefit the entire body and range in ability levels.
