Promise. Resilience. Spirit

What We Look For

The Determined Spirit Scholarship recognizes academic promise, a commitment to community, and a capacity for letting their life speak.

“Letting your life speak” is a Quaker phrase that reflects the idea of showing what you believe through how you live. We are interested in students who bring promise, resilience, and a determined spirit to the opportunities and challenges ahead.

What does "need-blind" mean?
Need-blind means we select scholarship recipients without considering a family’s financial circumstances. The scholarship is awarded on merit and is separate from the financial aid process. The recipient may also receive need-based financial aid from FCS.

Paying It Forward
A transformative experience in the FCS Middle School
The Determined Spirit Scholarship was established by an FCS family to honor their child’s three years at the School and the transformational power of its Middle School program. During those years, their child grew academically, socially, and emotionally in a community that saw and supported the whole child. The family hopes another student will have that same experience.

Their proud connections to Prince George’s County are also an important part of the scholarship’s story. Preference is given to county residents, though eligible students from other locations are welcome to apply.

At FCS, middle school is a time to think critically, take courageous risks, build meaningful relationships, and discover more about who we are and what we can contribute. The scholarship celebrates that potential and helps another student experience the growth and discovery that made FCS so meaningful to this family.
