Mapping in 1/2

Sara Keller, Admissions and Communications Associate
As a component of their current unit on geography, 1st and 2nd graders used the FCS campus to help them understand mapping, cardinal directions, scale, and perspective.
As a class, the students first learned about fundamental map skills. They examined different types of maps, completed activities using cardinal directions, and helped identify key tools used to create and understand maps like the compass rose. With these skills, they were ready to face the next part of their study… map making!

The students worked to survey and draw maps of their classroom and, instead of limiting their learning to the indoors, they also headed outdoors! The students mapped the front of the FCS campus, including the Peace Circle, play areas, and driveway.

After completing their individual maps, they worked in partnerships to compare their two sets of maps, discuss any differences, and add or adjust any elements where necessary. Working together, they combined their maps onto one large posterboard.

Using mapping as their introduction to geography and world studies, after this unit they’ll expand their studies outside of FCS, Maryland, and even the United States. In an interdisciplinary approach, 1/2 will connect their social studies and language arts work in a unit focused on nonfiction research and animals, habitats, and biomes of the world.
