Apps, Robotics, 3D Printing

Friends Community School’s Director of Technology Tracie Yorke brings her expertise to tech-intensive subjects at FCS Summer Camp: Robotics (for rising 3rd through 5th graders and 6th through 8th graders), App Design (for rising 6th through 8th graders), 3D Printing (for rising 3rd through 5th graders) and Coding (for rising 4th through 6th graders). All of these subjects will share an emphasis on the ideation stage: “I really push for students to come up with their own ideas,” Tracie says.

Tracie previously helped students develop apps in fortune-telling, sports, trivia, and more during Sidwell Friends School’s semester-long “Appy Hour.” At FCS Summer Camp, campers will design something meaningful to them, progressing from ideas to feasibility studies to the build-out stage. “I’m introducing students to the process of technology project-planning,” Tracie says.

Similarly, in the Robotics summer camp session, students will move from the brainstorming stage through teamwork and collaboration to prototyping and debugging. Campers new to robotics will use Little Bits circuitry and Arduinos to program the robots. More experienced campers will dive into programming, using Carnegie Mellon’s Robot C model to design both virtual and physical obstacle courses and code the robots to move through them, an introduction to concepts of artificial intelligence. See it in action in the video below.
