Zip Codes Turn Into Odes

As part of National Poetry Month in April, 5/6 Language Arts Teacher Holly Stephens came across a unique story about the "O, Miami" Poetry Festival, aimed at promoting county-wide cultural exchanges, that she incorporated into her classroom.
From placing poems on parking tickets, to flash-mob poetry recitals on the beach, it was the part of the festival that displayed a "zip ode" on a billboard across from the Miami Heat Arena that caught Holly's attention. The "zip ode" contest celebrated the idea of home by using the poet's zip code to determine how many words would be in each line of the poem.

“In 6th-grade language arts, we’ve been studying poetry and poetic techniques all year, and I thought students would be intrigued to try this format,” Holly said. “Some people decided to write two poems!” You can read the poems and leave affirmations on this padlet
