Sports Return to FCS: Friends Fire Defeats Latin

FoCuS Staff Writers
Did you know FCS has an ultimate frisbee team? Their season began on April 18th, in a home opener against Washington Latin. Friends Fire, as they are called, is coached and was started by 5/6 Language Arts teacher Holly Stephens.

Holly started the team shortly after arriving at FCS. “My son Coby and his friend Rosario [both FCS ‘21] wanted a team, so I offered an enrichment in the fall. Then the following fall I offered two enrichment classes (one just for girl-matching players, and one all-gender class), and we went to a couple of tournaments.”
Unfortunately, COVID halted their progress the following spring in 2020, but the team has made its return this year, practicing on Tuesday and Friday afternoons. Friends Fire is open to all grades in middle school and competes in a league with four other DC-area school teams.

The FoCuS was at the first game of the season against Washington Latin. Friends Fire played three separate games for their different skill levels and grades and won two out of three games. In the 6th grade-only game, the team scored an overtime win 8-7. In the mixed 6th, 7th, and 8th-grade game, they won 13-11. 6th-grader Beckett Djunaidy had a spectacular catch in the endzone.

“I think overall the team did really well, we all played hard because we were down 7-4, so we fought hard to come back and win,” said Beckett.

“I am so impressed by how my team played today. I could not watch the other [games], but they hustled the entire time,” said Holly, after the game.

Overall everybody enjoyed the game. Lots of fans and spectators came to watch the games and even some teachers like 7/8 Language Arts Teacher Dan Stafford. “I love having competitive sport teams at FCS,” said Dan.

Friends Fire shows that our community can support sports teams and that the future is bright for FCS sports.
