Practicing Democracy

As the whole nation voted in early November, students in 3/4 began their own study of democracy. This social studies unit takes place every other year and was especially exciting during an election year.

To begin, classes established themselves as states and created state seals.

They learned about roles they could play as class representatives and launched campaigns.

As citizens of their class states, they registered to vote, filling out actual paperwork from the state of Maryland and getting their own “voter ID cards.”

The winners in each election will become chairs of different committees.

Those committees (Senate: Environment and Natual Resources, Education and the Community / House: Education and the Classroom, Safety and Facilities) will then draft and attempt to pass bills.
