Celebrating Latine Heritage Month

Middle school students led the way in our celebration of Latine Heritage month.  Spanish Teacher Daniela Rivadeneira invited students to select honorees whose actions express the values of Simplicity, Peace, Integrity, Community, Equality, and Stewardship (the SPICES).  The students worked in groups to research, and deliver presentations to celebrate these individuals and their contributions.  This month’s honorees included athletes, visual artists, scientists, musicians, politicians and social media influencers.
In addition to delivering interesting presentations, students shared important questions and insights as they reflected on their work. Anna noted, “there are a lot of people who do good things, why do we celebrate some and not others?”  And, D explained, "Celebrations can be a lot of work!” Manny encouraged us to think about the difference between celebrating and appreciating people. He asked,  “Why do we need to appreciate people on a certain day, when they should be appreciated all the time?”

Adults who participate in community care wrestle with these questions often.  May the students’ words and work inspire us to reflect on our own practice.  Who do we appreciate? when? and how often?  Who do we overlook?  What keeps us from expressing appreciation for a more diverse community of people more often? What steps can we take to overcome those obstacles?

At FCS, we are committed to doing the work of celebrating Heritage months and to affirming the importance of expressing appreciation for a more diverse community of people more often.  We hope you will join us!  If you have ideas or are interested in participating, please reach out to Shauna Brown Leung via email.
