Keeping FCS Beautiful And Safe

Irma Guillen has come to know all the class schedules in the building because she has to time her work around student traffic. Still, the students find her, joyfully calling out, “Good morning Irma! Hola, Irma!” They know she helps to keep the school beautiful.

Irma started at FCS this May, bringing her skills to our ongoing COVID mitigation efforts by helping to sanitize surfaces, doors, bathrooms, and hallways multiple times a day. This is the first school she has worked in, but she likes that “it is clean and looks cared for. I like how people communicate here, and how they greet me.”
And greet her, the students do. “At the beginning, she says, “it felt uncomfortable having so many children around all the time, but now I am used to it and the children say hello, and they know my name.” Since all our students learn Spanish, some have enjoyed trying out their Spanish words with Irma who was born in El Salvador and has lived in the DC area for the past 31 years. She greets them in return as she makes sure the soap and hand sanitizer are always full and the bathrooms are well supplied.

“From day one, Irma has worked tirelessly while on campus,” facilities manager Dan Miller explains. “She cleans the most used spaces so frequently that I haven't seen a dirty bathroom since she started. Our building has never looked so clean at 2 PM, and I am deeply appreciative of her hard work.”

Irma spends time outside of FCS with her family and grandchildren. She says the cleaning company she works for has asked her to go other places, “but I like it here.” We are so thankful for that!
