In the rush to return back to normal, use this time to consider which parts of normal are worth rushing back to.
- Dave Hollis

I came across the quote above in April 2020 and it has been on my mind and in my heart since then. Even being fully vaccinated and living in a region that is relaxing COVID restrictions, I find myself hesitant to return to the normal I knew pre-COVID. What I knew seemed rushed, preoccupied, and hurried.
Last weekend my sister and I engaged in a ritual we have done for years, we planned a day of shopping looking for the best deals and bargains. After leaving the third store, my sister turned to me and said “remember how much fun this used to be? I am not sure I want to go back to normal.” Looking for items to fill rooms and closets already full and overflowing did not have much purpose or enjoyment. We mutually decided to return to my home. There we settled ourselves in chairs in my backyard and caught up on each other’s lives.

This school year began with a focus on the Quaker testimony of simplicity. As we return to normal I wonder what we will turn away from? What aspects of our new normal of the last year will we cling to and embrace?

Now that we are back at school, the pace is slower. Our school’s current configuration of classes and limited movement doesn’t allow for us to be quite as rushed. We recently asked our students young and old what they love most about being in school. They told us: seeing their friends and being in nature. Surely simplicity resonates within them as well.

As we prepare to return to normal may we cling to the quiet, restful spaces, and the joy of another’s company.

In peace and partnership,

Angela

Calendar Update: Last Week of School

In acknowledgment of the tremendous time and energy our FCS teachers have given this year to our students and community and in preparation for what should be a restorative summer for them and our staff, Tuesday, June 8th through Thursday, June 10th will all be half days and students will be dismissed at 12 PM (Kindergarten), 12:10 PM (Grades 1-4) and 12:20 PM (Grades 5-8). Teachers will use these afternoons for writing progress reports and documenting their curricula. We are thrilled to report that right now all of our faculty have signaled they will be returning next year. We want to take good care of them! As I mentioned in December, we are grateful for their perseverance and dedication.

Please note that while the FCS Camp will start June 14, the FCS administrative offices will be closed the week of June 21-25th.
