When I was younger, I always knew when my mother was worried. She was a reserved woman, and it was hard to gauge what she was thinking from her words or facial expressions. It was my mother’s piano playing that gave away her state of mind. Often, she would play the gospel song, “Peace! Be Still.” The song is based on the story of Jesus commanding a wind storm and breaking waves to cease. “They shall sweetly obey my will. Peace! Be still. Peace, be still.”
A few days ago I woke up with this song on my mind and in my heart.
Right now uncertainty swirls all around us. The flow and quantity of information from the media is nearly drowning: the spread of Coronavirus, the unsteadiness of the stock market, the rhetoric of the primaries and the presidential election.
I encourage each of us to turn the TV off, set the phone down, and put the newspaper aside. Just allow yourself to let go of your cares for a moment. What do you hear?
In Peace and Partnership,
Angela
