As I reread our school’s history, I am deeply moved by our Board’s commitment to environmental stewardship. Those who were involved in the design and planning of our current building took important steps to minimize non-essential water consumption and our demand for energy to heat and light the building. Our thoughtful design included incorporating passive solar energy, high efficiency boilers, light sensors, and high R-values for windows and exterior wall insulation.
Eight years ago, shortly after receiving our Silver-level LEED certification, FCS applied to the Maryland Association of Environmental and Outdoor Educators to join the Maryland Green Schools association. The application process is laborious, requiring significant documentation of curriculum, campus programs, partnerships, and professional development for educators. Earlier this week, we submitted our re-application to the association for continuing membership in the program. Four years from now, FCS will submit its final re-application and will acquire lifetime status with the organization. We deeply appreciate the work of Dan Stafford and Christine Dunathan, who compiled documentation on all of our recent ventures to enhance environmental stewardship on our campus and in the minds and actions of our children. We look for a positive response in April, perhaps around Earth Day.

In peace,

Larry
