March 8, 2019

March is an exciting month in independent schools as we announce our admissions decisions. Earlier this school year, I reported that applications to FCS were running well ahead of previous years, setting new records. Based on an excellent return rate of 93% for re-enrolling families, we had few openings in many classes. After reviewing the files of 130 applicants, we announced our offers to many hopeful families last Friday, with a significant wait list. We can expect our school to be filled to capacity again next year.

Equally interesting and exciting at this time of year is the placement of our 8th-grade class. Our soon-to-be graduates have applied to public magnet programs, Catholic high schools, and independent schools (see list of schools accepting Class of 2019 students below). With most but not all results in, our overall acceptance rate is running at 80%, reflecting the many commendable and desirable qualities of FCS students.

County-wide, only 15% of applicants to the Eleanor Roosevelt Science and Technology program are admitted; 78% of our 8th-grade applicants were admitted. Similarly, 70% of our students who applied to the highly competitive Montgomery County magnet programs (the Communication Arts and Science, Math, and Computer Science programs) were admitted. Catholic high schools continue to value FCS applicants: 100% of our students were admitted to their first and/or second choice of Catholic high schools. Families of our 8th-graders now sort through their many options to determine their choice.

Many thanks to Connie, Kate, our teaching staff, our parent volunteers, and student tour guides who made this year’s admissions efforts our most rewarding.

Congratulations to our 8th graders and their families, and deep appreciation for Adriana, Erin, and our teachers who wrote numerous recommendations to pave the way for the Class of 2019.

In Peace,

Larry
