On a normal day at this time of year, I schedule time to meet with prospective parents. I have always found these conversations to be informative, giving both parents and the school greater insight into the admissions process here at FCS. Again this year, virtually every parent has commented positively on the student tour guides, and some also commented on our students who host prospective students on their shadow day.
What is it about these students who represent FCS as tour guides, and why is their representation of the school so impactful? It is true that Connie seeks recommendations from teachers for candidates who can manage the responsibilities of being a tour guide. Connie’s training sessions are brief, focusing mostly on aspects of the building we want to highlight and questions they will likely be asked. Mostly, we want our students to talk proudly about their school. Respectful, poised, and well informed, our tour guides make a strong impression on parents. But prospective parents are also visiting classes and observing in the hallways when classes let out. They see our children in conversation with each other, lingering to talk with a teacher or advisor, or skipping down the hallway to their next class. When a parent attends an open house at FCS and observes our children in action, they are very likely to apply for enrollment.

It’s not just on campus that our students make a positive impression. Kiersten and our chorus participated in College Park’s Martin Luther King celebration again this year at the Clarice Smith concert hall at the University of Maryland. Our school has participated in this event annually from its very beginning. As most of this year’s presenters were adults, our youthful chorus stood out. Not only did they sing joyously and harmonize skillfully, our 4th through 8th graders exuded stage presence, confidence, and cooperation as they contributed to this important community event.

In Peace,
