Meeting Partners in Aisle 4

Mixed-age groups of students share time as “Meeting Partners” on Wednesdays at Friends Community School. This past Wednesday, 27 third-, fourth-, and sixth-grade Meeting Partners went on an adventure together.
Boarding a bus, the students and their teachers Donald, Rebecca, and Silvia traveled to the nearby Giant. Each student had $5, which they used to purchase canned soups, canned fruit, and applesauce--foods that the Bowie Interfaith Food Pantry especially needs right now. The teachers watched as the students took the lead to select their groceries, count their money, and check out. Then they got back on the bus to deliver the food to Bowie. Touring the food pantry, the Meeting Partners learned how the shelves are stocked and how the staff pack boxes of well-rounded meals for the people who need them.

Donald, who is an FCS 4th Grade Math Teacher and Teaching Assistant, is also FCS’s unofficial champion of service work. “We’re all privileged--every last one of us here is privileged. I think it’s really important to teach kids to give back.” In addition to organizing the food bank trip, Donald runs In Service to Others, a group of FCS families who come together once a month to cook meals for A Simple House. At their October meeting, 10 FCS families worked together to cook lasagnas, spaghetti, chicken soup, salad, vegetarian casserole, and mac and cheese. The cooks included current students and their parents, alumni students and their parents, and faculty and their children, and together they made enough food for 40 people. Donald says, “It’s the definition of community service.”
