Clasping Hands Today

Tomorrow the 8th grade graduates from Friends Community School, and today the whole school bid them farewell with affirmations at Meeting for Worship and through the ritual of the 8th Grade Tunnel. Watch a video of this year’s tunnel.
The tunnel is one of several distinctive graduation traditions at FCS. On the last Wednesday of the school year, all of the teachers and students in grades K through 7 gather outside and clasp hands to form a tunnel for the graduates to pass through. The ritual started at the school’s old building, when FCS had about 125 students. Now FCS has almost twice as many students, and the tunnel stretches around the Peace Circle to the driveway.

Many of this year's graduates were proudly wearing shirts representing the leading public, public magnet, and independent high schools they will attend next year. The Class of 2018 were accepted into their first- or second-choice schools at a rate of 98%. Destinations include: DeMatha Catholic High School; Edmund Burke; Eleanor Roosevelt - Capstone Program; Eleanor Roosevelt Sci & Tech; Elizabeth Seton; Georgetown Day School; Georgetown Visitation Preparatory School; Gonzaga College High School; Landon School; Montgomery County HS (Blair); Montgomery County HS (Blake); Our Lady of Good Counsel High School; St. Anselm's Abbey School; St. John's College High School; TC Williams-STEM; The Academy of the Holy Cross; The Bryn Mawr School; and The George School.
