Sophie's Initiative for Nepal

When Nepali friends were caught in the first earthquake last month, Sophie, an FCS 5th grader, was moved to take action. She launched a fundraising campaign to benefit earthquake victims in Pokara.
The second-largest city in Nepal, Pokara is where Sophie's family friends run Sam's House, a home for abandoned, orphaned, and at-risk children. Sam's House has become a center of relief efforts in the local community, providing food and medical care. With the second earthquake, the further losses for survivors and their extreme living conditions has kept Sophie dedicated to raising funds.
As Sophie says in the video below, the average yearly income in Nepal is $1,000 a year; $1 can provide a child food for two days, $15 will feed a child for a month.

You can make a donation through Sophie (c/o Nepal Relief at FCS) or the Sam's House website (www.sams-house.org). Contributions to this 501(c)(3) from U.S. citizens are eligible for tax deduction.

To date, Sophie has raised more than $2,900!

Thank you, Sophie, for demonstrating that one person with compassion, initiative, and determination can really make a difference in the world.
